Chest Congestion. What’s that?
It a very common infection that usually appears in the respiratory system. The lower tract of the respiratory system starts to feel a bit weird, which ultimately causes difficulty in breathing and soon after chest pain and discomfort appear. In simple words, chest congestion is the accumulation of excess mucus and fluid in the lungs. When we breathe, we inhale several particles, like dust, viruses, allergens, bacteria, etc. These particles get trapped by mucus, which covers the mucus membranes. The mucus goes through the throat – you will either swallow it or cough it out. The extra mucus cases chest congestion.
What causes it?
The disposition of bacteria and viruses on mucus membranes is one of the main reasons. Here are some other causes:
- Exposure to poisonous gases

- Blood in cough
- Runny nose
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Loud noise while breathing

Are there any home remedies?
It is a very common symptom and it can be found in anyone – toddlers, teenagers, and adults. Very few people take out time to utilize some home remedies for treatment of chest congestion, because we always go to the doctor. We never know that some ingredients, present in the kitchen, can work so effectively for health problems, like chest congestion. Lemons are the best for this congestion. Add some grated lemon rind or a lemon wedge in a cup of hot water and let it steep for five minutes. Drink the water after straining it. You can also use this solution for gargling.
- Salt water gargle
Using saline water for gargling helps removing mucus from respiratory tube. Boil a glass of water and add 1-2 tablespoons of salt in it. Stir it well and add a pinch of turmeric powder to it. Take a swig of warm water and gargle for 1-2 minutes. This process should be repeated up to 5 times a day.
Put one piece of ginger into hot water and add two or three black pepper in the mixture, and then strain it in a glass. Stir it well adding one tablespoon of honey to it. Drink this beverage up to three times a day. You may also want to try to add one teaspoon of ginger in a glass of hot water and put a pinch of ground cloves and cinnamon in it. After soaking and filtering it, drink it for an instant relief.
- Onion and honey
It is known that onions have anti-inflammatory properties. They are an effective remedy for curing chest congestion, when used with honey. Place a slice of onion in a bowl and cover it with honey. Let it stay for overnight. The next day, remove onion from it and consume this onion soaked honey, 4 times a day. You can also take one spoon of honey with it. Eating raw onions is also very helpful.
- Oregano oil
Take some oregano oil and apply it on the chest and throat. You can also consume oregano oil capsules.
This plant is an effective natural remedy. Thyme makes lungs so strong to fight against the mucus-causing bacteria. Thyme acts as a protecting shield against bacteria. For usage of thyme, prepare tea by adding one-fourth of half teaspoon of thyme in one cup of boiling water. Soak it for ten minutes and then drink it. You can add some honey to sweeten it up.
- Boiled vinegar
Boiled vinegar is also beneficial against chest congestion. Boil it and use it for inhaling its vapor’s.
- Bay leaf
This herb is a real natural remedy for more than a few health problems, including chest congestion. For curing chest congestion, one can have tea prepared from bay leaves. For this, you are required to take fresh bay leaves and put them into a cup of boiling water. Drink it warm, after you have let it soaked for some time.
A hot compress – you can also use its leaves for this. Put some bay leaves in hot water. Boil it for some time. Then, strain it. Now, dip a clean cloth in the strained water and place it on the chest. Your chest should be relieved after some time.
- Hot tea with lemon and honey
In order to relieve your throat, prepare tea and add a little honey and lemon juice in it. Drink it to get a calming relief in the throat and chest. It is really helpful.
Radish acts a natural exfoliate and fights against chest congestion. It is effective in when a person suffer from bronchitis, allergies, and cold. Take one radish and chop it, add lemon juice and have it every morning on an empty stomach.
What about radish juice? Wash some radishes and chop them. Use a juicer to extract fresh juice. Drink it every day.
- Black coffee
If you suffer with shortness of breath and cough, what you should do is consume two or three cups of black coffee. Caffeine present in coffee acts like a medication against shortness of breath and clears mucus.
- Apple cider vinegar
Vinegar helps in killing bacteria and produces mucus in the chest and throat. It relieves congestion and helps in breathing better. It is awful in taste but is effective. Swig down a shot of apple cider vinegar. Do this every eight hours for better results. Be careful – do this for up to three days, or otherwise you will get a stomachache.
- Herbal tea
Herbal teas are very helpful and they fight against chest congestion. Tea prepared from various herbs, like chamomile, ginger, etc. is very effective. Anti-inflammatory properties of herbal tea deal with the bacteria that cause congestion. They are really helpful indeed.
- Steamy shower
Hot water in the shower or bath helps in loosening of mucus that is stuck in the throat and lungs. It works similar to drinking hot water. It is a fast way for dealing with mucus.
- Steam inhaling
Inhaling steam is excellent if you want to loosen your mucus and it will clear your chest congestion. Just boil some water in a large bowl. Bend over the bowl and cover your head with a clean towel. Now, inhale the vapor coming out from hot water. For best results, add a few drops of essential oil (peppermint or eucalyptus oil) in the boiling water. This will help in loosening hardened phlegm. Do not forget to close your eyes when you breathe in eucalyptus and peppermint oil vapors – they can really badly irritate your eyes.
- Turmeric, honey, and black pepper in milk
Turmeric is a natural antioxidant and it is believed to be the king of all spices. It has got anti-inflammatory properties, it is helpful in curing several internal and external problems of the body. You just have to add half teaspoon of turmeric powder in one cup of hot milk. Add two teaspoons of honey and a pinch of black pepper to it. Stir it and drink it while it’s hot.
It can be prepared as tea as well. Add two tablespoons of turmeric powder and two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in tea.
- Mustard plaster
It is really effective against several respiratory infections, bronchitis included. For preparing a mustard plaster, you are required to mix 1 tablespoon of dry mustard with 4 tablespoons of flour. Add a little water to make a runny paste. Before coating mustard plaster on the chest, apply some olive oil. Spread mustard paste on a clean muslin cloth and place it onto the chest and let it cool on your chest. Be careful – remove the plaster if it causes a burning sensation.
- Hot pack
Hot pack works effectively against chest congestion. Roast some cloves, carom seeds or fenugreek for 2-3 minutes. Put them in a thin cloth and pack them together. Put this cloth on your throat and chest for a few seconds. You will notice a big change.
Not just onion and honey, but one onion is enough to fight this congestion. Grind it until it becomes a thin paste. Extract its juice by pressing the paste. Add two tablespoons of water in it. Now, add four tablespoons of lemon juice and two tablespoons of honey in the mixture. Stir it well and heat it until it turns warm. Consume it up to three times a day.
It treats stomach ache, prevents cancer and other ailments. It is also a natural remedy to remove mucus from the lungs. For the treatment of chest congestion, have sautéed fennel. Adding some curry powder to fennel – even better for curing congestion.
Homeopathic remedies can also help in fighting against chest congestion. They don’t have any side-effects, and unlike home remedies, they do not require any sort of mixing or soaking. All you have to do is simply use them:
- Kali bichromicum – helpful for thick and sticky mucus. It also works against bronchitis cough;
- Bryonia alba – you can also find it under the name bryony – very effective for congestion. It is used when a person suffers with headache, excessive thirst, dry cough, etc.
- Natrum muriaticum – if a person suffers with watery chest congestion, they should use this remedy. Its effect can be judged when symptoms improve by sweating, fresh air, and fasting.
What do in order to prevent chest congestion?
